Sailboat Bend, formerly known as Old Fort Lauderdale, Himmarshee Village, or the New River Settlement, has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of squalor to become the cultural and artistic center of Fort Lauderdale and indeed of all Broward County. The Sailboat Bend Historic District is comprised of 550 buildings in what is the oldest neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale; architectural styles range from early 1900’s cottages and bungalows, to Mission and Mediterranean Revival. In the area along the waterfront large old-growth trees predominate and prices ascend to the millions, but many historic homes in the area are reasonably priced considering their proximity so much culture. Best of all it's just a short walk to so much fun!
Things to do in Sailboat BendJust about everything is here, it has been designated the Arts and Science District: heading east along Las Olas Boulevard crossing the Avenue of the Arts is the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; diagonally across Himmarshee Street is the Museum of Discovery and Science. Cooley’s Landing, dedicated to William Cooley, a founding settler of Fort Lauderdale, is to the south of the Center for the Performing Arts; Esplanade Park directly across from the Museum of Discovery and Science. From there meander along Riverwalk North to Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, featuring festivals and fairs and fests throughout the year, with street buskers, performance artists, and all styles of music and food.
